There's this radio station I listen to...

which I am not going to name because they are a Clear Channel station and I don't want to give them free publicity. Their morning radio guy is fascinating when he talks about music, and a Rush-Limbaugh type when he talks about much of anything else. (The other disc jockeys tend to be apolitical and I actually like them.)

But once a year, in August, they do something I absolutely love: they play all the songs in their library in alphabetical order. It's great because a) you hear a lot of songs they only play rarely; b) because the songs are essentially randomly ordered, the music sounds much more varied than usual; and c) you get to hear cover versions right next to originals. (My favorite is when they play both versions of "Layla" back to back -- I could do a lengthy bit on how the two versions stack up against each other, but that may be another post.)

The best part about it may just be the ads:

"Classic Rock, A-Z: because arranging them by height just wasn't practical."
and
"Our entire library, presented in the most anal-retentive way we know how...."
and
"Proudly showing off our organizational skills -- classic rock, A-Z"

KFOG does A-Z, too, and aren't a Clear Channel station. :)

(I think I know who you're talking about. I used to have an abject drooly fangirl crush on that DJ -- 21+ years ago, before I realized he's a right winger. :) )

That would be so cool! I wish I could catch that. Do they, by chance, broadcast online?

Mmmmm... KFOG.
