The Bible study exercise I wrote for my church yesterday was about the cult of celebrity, and how it affects people. One of my questions was "How does the cult of celebrity affect how you view your own life?"

And I realized that I have steadfastly refused to respond to requests for news from my alumni magazines --- after all, given that classmates are doing things like running for mayor of San Francisco and becoming executive director of the ACLU, being a homemaker seems really unimportant. In the past couple of years, I have on more than one occasion turned on CNN to see a former classmate being interviewed.

Today, in my email, was a request for news from the class correspondent. So I responded, basically saying I was home raising kids. I also mentioned Jeopardy.

So maybe I can stop being ashamed of myself, and recognize the meaning in my own life.

Isn't raising kids well, way more important than almost anything anyone is famous for? And really, judging by the number of celebrity parent tell all books, it seems like being a good parent is way harder than most anything people get famous for.

I go through the opposite version of this when it's my Mom's family involved. They all think I'm a loser because I'm not married and raising children.

I have nothing but the utmost respect for you and the decisions you've made. You are an amazing mother, with three intelligent boys. And, I think keeping up with their schedules and differing personalities is a full-time job anyway!! Kids are hard work.

I keep hoping that my high school will get out of the old popularity stuff. So far my updates have apparently been boring enough to be ignored every time I send them.

And, you have other things to tell ("It's like Bavaria, without the lederhosen!") - plus, your kiddos rock. Raising neat kids into reasonable people is one of the hardest jobs you could be doing.

I'm glad you've reached this place, Pat. It speaks well of you.
