When I am old, I shall listen to rock music ...
I had an interesting conversation with my eldest sister yesterday. The conversation turned to music.
"I used to listen all of that -- Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, The Who, The Rolling Stones -- when I was in the college. I loved the beat and the energy. Now I don't really like it any more."
See, I didn't like that music when I was in college -- it was too loud, and strong, and raucous. I was strictly a Billy Joel/John Denver/Simon & Garfunkel/Chicago sort. The Beatles were okay -- except for some of the stranger things on The White Album.
I still like Billy Joel, John Denver and S&G. (Chicago, however -- I can't understand how I ever liked them.) But now some of my favorite songs in my music library are "Won't Get Fooled Again" and "Wish You Were Here" and "Immigrant Song" and "Sympathy for the Devil." Not to mention the original "Layla," which I don't think I fully appreciated until I turned forty, and Hendrix's "All Along the Watchtower." I have multiple songs by the Red Hot Chili Peppers, and The Ramones, and The Clash, and Green Day. I have music by Metallica. Heck, I've even got a song by Alice in Chains. (Okay, so it's an acoustic song by AIC, but it's an AIC song nonetheless.)
A lot of this is due to having a music fiend for a son. But it's something more than that -- a process of opening up, somehow. A process of becoming more... unafraid, in some ways, I think.
Or maybe I'm just losing my hearing : )
