Two more WWF posts: a short one pointing to a good post by a friend of mine, and a long one about why they should not breed Barbaro even if they can save him.

I think it's so sad what is happening to various domesticated animals in the quest for some goal only of interest to humans, not the animals. The kind of selection pressure we apply is just too intense, too fast, and unfortunate sideeffects seem to be inevitable.

I watched Moulin Rouge again on Saturday - that scene is one of the most intense in the movie.

Thanks Pat. That's a very good sermon you linked to.

As for Barbaro, some might say that Seabiscuit suffered a similar injury and went on to do just fine. I'd note that he suffered it after he'd won over 100 races and was considerably older. He also recovered from it and went on to win the Santa Anita Derby in 1940.

Barbaro ran, IIRC, six races, including the Derby, before he broke down in the Preakness.
