TQOTD: The Marine's Hymn
[Since I haven't been able to do TQOTDs for several days, I am going to do several today. This is an easy one...]
This is in memory of my father, who would sing the "Marine's Hymn" to his children when they were small.
In what modern-day country would you find "the shores of Tripoli"? Who were we fighting?
"The shores of Tripoli" would be in modern-day Libya. The United States went to war in 1801, after the Pasha of Tripoli demanded more in tribute (protection money) from the United States than they had previously agreed upon. (Tripoli, like other of the Barbary States of North Africa, supported piracy, and demanded tribute from nations doing shipping in the region in exchange for keeping the pirates at bay.) The fledgeling Marine Corps was responsible for the capture of the port of Derna.
