TQOTD: The Oscars...what else?

In 1983, Linda Hunt won a Best Supporting Actress Oscar for her role in The Year of Living Dangerously. What was unusual about this role?

She was playing a man, photographer Billy Kwan. And, without getting into the transgender issues raised by Hilary Swank's win as Brandon Teena in "Boys Don't Cry", Linda Hunt may well be the only person to win an award for playing someone who is unquestionably a member of the opposite gender.

I was like nine when that came out and that was sooo confusing to me. I thought she was a man. Especially in Dune.

She did a great job with the role. But the movie confused me too, the first time I saw it, because I didn't quite figure out she was playing a man.
