What do the names Ana, Bill, Claudette, and Danny have in common?

They are some of the names on the 2003 list of Atlantic tropical storm names. These lists are maintained and updated by an international committee of the World Meteorological Organization. The National Hurricane Center started naming storms in 1953.

Hurricane season officially started June 1, although a storm in April has already been designated Ana.

I'm feeling all nostalgic. Earthquakes just don't have the same je ne sais quoi for me that hurricanes do. I miss having hurricane tracking charts on the back of the brown paper bags at the grocery store.

Hurricane Tracking

When I moved from Augusta to Atlanta, I noticed a definite lack of the hurricane tracking maps/guides. I have to have my little brother pick them up for me now!

And, yes, I agree....there is something about a hurricane!

Hurricane Tracking

One of the things I like about hurricanes is that you *can* track them -- watching their development over time. Earthquakes (and I was in the SF Bay Are for the 1989 Loma Prieta quake) just happen. That, and it's really scary to have the ground under your feet rolling like the deck of a ship in bad weather.
