I really need to get satellite radio. I spent a good part of my vacation subjecting my family to show tunes.... I therefore have some observations....

Best songs to sing along to:
"Everything's Coming Up Roses," from Gypsy, Bernadette Peters
"Mein Herr" and "Cabaret", Cabaret, Liza Minnelli

Best song to sing along to -- male division:
"The Impossible Dream", Man of La Mancha, Richard Kieley (I first learned this song in fourth grade. Mrs. North, my fourth grade teacher, loved Broadway and taught us numbers from several musicals. Some of them, like "Do a Deer" and "Consider Yourself" made sense for fourth graders, but, in retrospect, "The Impossible Dream" was a bit of an odd choice.)

Best Songs from Musicals I Have Not Seen Yet, but Would Like to:
"I Put A Little More Mascara On," La Cage Aux Folles, (I wish I could remember the singer)
"Where Did We Go Right?", The Producers, Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick

Worst Song from a Musical Wild Horses Could not Drag me to See:
"The Name of the Game", Mamma Mia! -- I can't remember the singer, but does it really matter? Yechh... ABBA. "Dancing Queen" is marginally better. My question, for someone who has actually seen Mama Mia! is -- do they use "Fernando"?

Best Performance by a Singing Detective:
"Lullaby of Broadway", 42nd Street, Jerry Orbach. (Yes, that Jerry Orbach. In his long musical theatre career, among other things, he was the first actor to play Billy Flynn in Chicago on the New York stage. He has an amazing voice.)

Songs I Found Vaguely Annoying for Reasons I Could Not Figure Out:
"Memories", Cats, Betty Buckley (I don't know why, but I wanted to throw something at the radio when this came on.)
"Mame", Mame, the cast of Mame. (It's supposed to be sung by a bunch of Southerners, but no Southerner I ever met would sing something like that..."Georgia never had a sweeter peach"? Give me a break.)

Song I'll Never be Able To Sing but Wish I Could, Male Division: "Wilkommen", Cabaret, Joel Grey. (I would have trouble doing the patter in the middle convincingly. Great song, though.)

Song I'll Never Be Able To Sing But Wish I Could, Female Division:
"I Could Have Danced All Night," My Fair Lady, Julie Andrews. (My range just does not go that high.)

Musicals I Haven't Seen but Want To See For Reasons That Have Nothing to Do With the Music:
The Lion King (for the innovative staging)
Urinetown (honestly? because of the title)

Musicals I haven't Seen but I Want To See Because of the Music:
Rent, Gypsy,Into The Woods, 42nd Street, My One and Only, La Cage Aux Folles, The Producers, Nine, and on and on and on... and hey, doesn't Sondheim have a new one coming out the next few months?

Yes, I've seen Mama Mia!, and I liked it. :^) Then again, both Akien and I actually LIKED ABBA when we were in HS, so there you are. The two major songs they didn't use in the musical, IIRC, were "Fernando" and "Waterloo." But they did "Waterloo" as a big whole-cast encore. Mostly, I thought they did a good job of managing to make a story out of all those otherwise disconnected songs. It was cool to see how they did it. (And it was a lovely serendipitous thing that Akien happened to get us tix on Opening Night, and both guys and one of the gals were actually there! Cool!)

I find "Memories" a bit grating much of the time. It tends to encourage a fairly nasal tone from the singer, and parks up in what is often a difficult tessatura. Besides, it got WAY overplayed.

I was fortunate to see 42nd Street on (well, I think it was actually off-) Broadway in NY some years back. That was cool. It was a very fun musical.

(I don't know why, but I wanted to throw something at the radio when this came on.)

I think just the fact that it was "Memories" ought to be reason enough. ;)

You probably already know this...

Sirius has nifty sattilite receivers that plug into your home sterio now. And you can take the reciever down and plug it into your car.

After having Sirius in my car for the last year and loving it we broke down and got the home unit - and love it.

Actually, I had heard that. I'm considering asking for one for Christmas.

Welcome! I don't think I've seen you in my journal before.
