My youngest son has occasionally been known to sneak out to church wearing shorts and a ratty t-shirt.

This morning, however, he asked for long pants rather than the shorts he had clean. I found a pair. He normally wears an 8, but this was a pair of 10 slims that had fit him okay. Today, I noticed that he was having trouble zipping them up.

"Are those uncomfortable?" "No, no they're fine." "Do they hurt?" "Yes, but...."

I got him sweatpants. No dice. "Mom, these pants look good on me." "But they hurt." "Well, yeah, but it's okay. It goes with this shirt."

I finally lured him out of the too-tight pants by hunting his Spanish shirt with the flamenco bulls on it out of the clean clothes pile. He asked "Are you trying to get me into different pants?" "Yes, I am." Big sigh. But he changed pants.

The other pants are going into the Goodwill pile.

One of the interesting things about the Law and Order franchise is how it draws its actors from Broadway.

The dearly departed Jerry Orbach, of course, had a long and outstanding career on The Great White Way. But it doesn't end there....

Jesse L. Martin got his big break in Rent. S. Epatha Merkeson was nominated for a dramatic Tony for The Piano Lesson.

Over at SVU, B.D. Wong (my nominee for sexiest voice on network television) won a Tony for his Broadway debut role in M. Butterfly. (He also played Linus in a revival of "You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown," which I find delightful.) (SVU draws its cast from a variety of origins: Ice-T was the father of gangsta rap.)

Jamey Sheridan of L&O: CI has been in a number of Broadway productions, earning a Tony nomination in 1987 for a revival of Arthur Miller's All My Sons. Katherine Erbe was nominated for a Tony for her role in 1991 The Speed of Darkness. Courtney B. Vance has two Tony nominations, for Picket Fences in 1987 and Six Degrees of Separation in 1991.

And then there is the wonderful Bebe Neuwirth on Trial by Jury (who was the reason I started contemplating all of this to begin with). She has TWO Tonys, for her performances in the revivals of Sweet Charity (1987) and Chicago (1997 -- she played Velma Kelly).

My hunch is that Broadway actors end up on the show because it is shot in NYC, but that would just be a guess.

For end of the week purchases::

Elmer Bernstein, "The Great Escape" Theme (yay!)

"So Long and Thanks for All the Fish" (which was today's top downloaded soundtrack song -- little surprise there)

"The Hitchiker's Guide to Blogging" and "..... Deadlines" and "Reason to be Miserable (His Name is Marvin)"

"The Murder" from the Psycho soundtrack (or maybe not, depending upon my mood.)

"Soul Sacrifice" Santana -- except they don't seem to have the incendiary Woodstock version.

"American Idiot" Green Day

"Sitting, Waiting,Wishing" and "Flake" Jack Johnson

"Daughters" John Mayer

Screw it. It's just a friggin' television show. A damn well put together television show, but just a television show.
