Censorship alert....

I do not write slash, or any fanfiction, but I think this needs to be disseminated: [livejournal.com profile] fandom_scruples has created a blacklist of people who write NC-17 fanfic (I think mainly Harry Potter related, but I was not sure if it is limited to that), and is threatening to turn names over to an unnamed federal agency unless people lock their material. (The link is to [livejournal.com profile] chesyre's post regarding the subject.)

Just for the record, I have three children, and I am far far more scared and worried about people like [livejournal.com profile] fandom_scruples than about anything anyone might post online.

[Edit: Some more information about the status of COPA (it was ruled unconstitutional in 2003 by the Third Circuit Court of Appeals) , courtesy of [livejournal.com profile] giglet. And [livejournal.com profile] rosenho is calling on people to complain to LJ.]

Thanks for the warning. I have four children and I'm far more worried about people's rights to write what they desire. It's my job to make sure my kids aren't going places and seeing things i dont' agree with, and it's my problem if they go where they aren't suppost to, NOT the person who writes and posts.

I don't think [livejournal.com profile] fandom_scruples has a leg to stand on. In their own journal they write that the COPA applies to materials distributed for commercial purposes; fanfic writers don't make a dime off their efforts.

I cannot understand why such people get a bee in their bonnet about such things. Don't they realize that by making a "blacklist" that they've just provided a list of all the really juicy sites to kids? :P

I don't think s/he has a leg to stand on, but I am cynical enough to think that there might be people in some prosecutor's office who would love harassing people on this.
