My sister's husband, J. is a geek. He's an engineer and a computer programmer and loves gadgets and gizmos. (He is also an Antiochean Orthodox priest, and lives in Mississippi. So he's unusual on a number of fronts.) S., my sister, is *not* a geek. She's a lovely woman, and is the most well-adjusted person among my siblings, but she is not a geek. (Her daughters, on the other hand, take after their father.)
Earlier this year, in conversation with my brother, S. said "Surely you don't think I would actually let him go to Radio Shack by himself?!?" (J. goes to RS and gets lots of things to tinker with. My understanding is that my sister finds this exasperating. I can only imagine what he would do if he lived near a Fry's.)
Guess for what store I got him a gift certificate. Okay, so it's only $25, but I can imagine the grin on his face as he says Christmas morning (in that quiet understated way of his) "Look, S, Radio Shack!"
I no longer have very young relatives to whom I can give drum sets, so this will have to do. : )
