My sister's husband, J. is a geek. He's an engineer and a computer programmer and loves gadgets and gizmos. (He is also an Antiochean Orthodox priest, and lives in Mississippi. So he's unusual on a number of fronts.) S., my sister, is *not* a geek. She's a lovely woman, and is the most well-adjusted person among my siblings, but she is not a geek. (Her daughters, on the other hand, take after their father.)

Earlier this year, in conversation with my brother, S. said "Surely you don't think I would actually let him go to Radio Shack by himself?!?" (J. goes to RS and gets lots of things to tinker with. My understanding is that my sister finds this exasperating. I can only imagine what he would do if he lived near a Fry's.)

Guess for what store I got him a gift certificate. Okay, so it's only $25, but I can imagine the grin on his face as he says Christmas morning (in that quiet understated way of his) "Look, S, Radio Shack!"

I no longer have very young relatives to whom I can give drum sets, so this will have to do. : )

My brother-in-law and his wife used to send our kids these horrible toys -- dump trucks with "Real Soooouund! (TM)", that sort of thing. After the birth of their first daughter, I picked out for them a light-up turtle that played the worst off-key electronic music you would ever want to hear. The next year, they gave our kids... Lincoln Logs.

Geeks the world over are bowing down in worship, you know. ;)

At Home Depot, there's a special deal where if you buy $50 worth of tools (and maybe just on certain days) you get a bumper sticker with My Toy Store and their logo. It is almost worth buying presents for my brothers & sisters-in-law, just to give J the bumper sticker. (Normally I'd just buy stuff for their kids.)
