(This is my first TQOTD for several days because I was out of town....)

Who won the 1969 Grammy for Best Country Song? (Note: this award is given to the songwriter, not the performer.)

I'll even give you a hint: Johnny Cash won the Grammy for Best Vocal Performance, Male for the same song.



Answer: Shel Silverstein, for "A Boy Named Sue". Source: Information Please Almanac. For those of you who have not had the great fortune of being acquainted with Silverstein's work, in addition to being a cartoonist and composer, he is a writer of children's books such as "The Giving Tree" and collections of poetry such as "Where the Sidewalk Ends." (My own favorite Silverstein poem is "How Not to Dry the Dishes".) "A Boy Named Sue" is very much typical of Silverstein's work, to my mind, and it is a very funny song.
