Over at jmhm, a discussion of (and link to) really bad seventies pop music. Damn. Now I have "Angel of the Morning" stuck in my head.

But what about the eighties? I don't care how popular the song was, or how brilliant Bobby McFerrin is (which I will concede), every time I hear "Don't Worry, Be Happy" I want to commit an act of violence, preferably upon the singer or songwriter. That it beat out Tracy Chapman's brilliant, searing, "Fast Car" for Song of the Year is both an indictment of the Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences and a sad commentary upon America in the Reagan/Bush pere years.

"Don't Worry, Be Happy" to be one of those songs, like "Born In the U.S.A." which American conservatives took for themselves, not realizing that it was a blistering attack on their policies.

You remember when Bobby McFerrin sued Bush Pere to make him stop using the song as a campaign song, because McFerrin wrote it to point out the fatuousness of the Reagan/Bush policies? That was classic. . .

I hate Journey. They're not as bad as Boston, but... (You're familiar with the geographical theory of bad rock? That bands named after places are generally bad?)

By the way, the eldest is playing all sort of music from bands I've never heard of ... or heard of and thought I'd never like ... in an effort to increase my musical education. I have decided I love Rasputina. (I even listened to an Alice in Chains song! Okay, so it was an acoustic Alice in Chains song, but it was still an Alice in Chains song! : ) )

What's not to like about Rasputina? =) If you can find a copy of "Diamond Mind", listen to that. Absolutely hysterical.

If you're on a cello kick now, hunt down some Apocalyptica. I think I posted some in my recent large song-o-the-week link dump. Four classically-trained Finish cellists who cover old speed metal tunes; they have an entire Metallica cover album.

And seriously, you ought to play that Gwen Stefani/Soggy Bottom Boys mashup for James. ;)

I've only met you once or twice at a few events at weirdness but saw this on friends of friends and had to reply.

Yeah, what you said. "Fast car" is a song that can reliably make me cry. Reaches right into my heart in a good and bad way. Glad to know that others appreciate it as well.
