I have been working on other projects, and so have not been updating this journal. I don't know that that will change any time soon. However, I found the following just to strange not to share.
Suriname is the smallest independent country in South America. According to the CIA World Fact Book (which is, as far as I am concerned, a wonderful use of taxpayer dollars), what is the most popular religion?
[Edit: posted to wrong journal: just keeping it in case anyone is interested.]
Hindu. In the 19th century, the Dutch who colonized Suriname imported laborers from India to work the sugarcane and coffee plantations, so that today the largest ethnic group is Hindustani (descended from the Indians) and the most popular religion (with 27% of the population) is Hindu. The second largest ethnic group is Javanese, who were imported along with the Indians. (Java, is part of Indonesia, which was at that time the Dutch East Indies.) The second most popular religion (at 25%) is Protestant Christianity, while ROman Catholicism clocks in at 22%.
