(I'd agree that it's one of the best, but there are a whole bunch of other Johnny Cash songs that deserve consideration too. Not to mention one by David Allen Coe.)
I also like "I Walk the Line" and "Cocaine Blues". Oh, and "Jackson," the duet with June. "Hurt" is wonderful, but I have trouble thinking of it as a country song since it was written by Trent Reznor. I think "Busted" is *the* archetypical "my dog died" country song, but I think I prefer the Ray Charles version. What are your favorites?
My favorite country instrumental has got to be "Foggy Mountain Breakdown" by Flatt & Scruggs.
Yeah, Walk the Line and Jackson are up there. I think if I had to vote for *one* song as Best Country Song of All Time, I'd give the nod to Walk the Line, though it'd be a difficult decision. He Stopped Lovin' Her Today and Honky Tonk Angel both deserve honorable mention.
The David Allen Coe song is "The Perfect Country Song"
You don't have to call me Waylon Jennings And you don't have to call me Charlie Pride And you don't have to call me Merle Haggard any more Even though I'm on your fightin' side.
And I'll hang around as long as you will let me And I'll never leave you standin' in the rain. And you don't have to call me darlin', darlin'. You never even call me by my name.
Well I was drunk the day my momma got out of prison. And I went to pick her up in the rain. But before I could get to the station in my pickup truck She got run over by a danged old train.
And I'll hang around as long as you will let me And I'll never leave you standin' in the rain. And you don't have to call me darlin', darlin'. You never even call me. Why don't you ever call me? You never even call me by my name.
