[I've been trying for the past two days to do TQOTDs and between the DDOS attacks (why would some idiot attack LiveJournal?) and problems with my computer I haven't gotten them done. (It's not just LJ, some other sites I use have been crashing a lot.)]
You may have read my rant a month or so ago about how Alfred Hitchcock never won a Best Director Oscar. What director has won the most Best Director Oscars?
John Ford. Ford won four Best Director Oscars -- for The Informer, The Grapes of Wrath, How Green Was My Valley, and The Quiet Man. (In his win for How Green Was My Valley, Ford beat out Orson Welles, who was nominated for Citizen Kane .) Ford also won two more Oscars for Best Documentary for his W.W.II films December 7th and The Battle of Midway.
In the genre for which he is probably most associated, the Western, Ford was only nominated once: for Stagecoach (he lost to Victor Fleming, who won for Gone with the Wind.) Source: Entertainment Weekly.
