Consider electrical wiring. Your standard American plug is compatible with an American socket. Your grounded (three-prong) American plug is also pretty compatible with most American sockets.
The two-prong and three-prong plugs aren't particularly compatible with each other.
I really take these things very tongue in cheeck -- and I notice there are whole aspects of personality that they don't cover, or only very superficially -- like spirituality, and values.
