First, you have to understand this about D's team: they're bad. Really, really bad. As in, not have won a game all season bad. But they keep chugging along. D has never been able to keep it together long enough to play a full game (he got ejected from one for throwing his helmet).
Last night we were playing the one of the top teams in this division in the first game of the playoffs. The parents of our boys, being realists, settled in for a long and unpleasant blowout (there is no mercy rule at this point in the season). I was nervous because a number of players had to miss the game, and if D melted down and couldn't play they might have to forfeit the game.
What happened? They got on base. They made plays in the outfield. The pitching was good, the fielding good. They stole bases. They had hits. D managed to play an entire game (albeit with some whining -- and the umpire had to take him aside and warn him about arguing balls and strikes). We only had one meltdown resulting in a thrown helmet (NOT D). As one parent said, "Who replaced our kids?"
They led 2-1 until the bottom of the last inning, against the top team in the division. We may have a chance against the next team.
