As I picked up my third grader from school today, I passed a couple of fifth grade girls who were discussing Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back.

Don't get me wrong, I love Kevin Smith's work, and I thought the movie in question a riot. But in what universe it is appropriate viewing for eleven-year-olds?

The same universe in which I witnessed a pair of parents take their four-year-old to South Park: Bigger, Longer and Uncut. Which is to say, one that lost its sense of balance and decorum sometime back (though picking a time and place beggars the point; Socrates' contemporaries decried him for corrupting youth, and "The Love Boat" has drifted from scandalous television to wholesome family entertainment).

Oy. Maybe they thought because it was a cartoon it was okay? Sheesh.

It isn't obviously inappropriate in mine - it depends on the kids and what they, as individuals, are affected by. My nine-year-old, for instance, is entirely unaffected by bad language - it doesn't appeal to him, he never copies it. If anything, it bores him, so I wouldn't show him the South Park movie for that reason, not because anything in it would disturb him or provoke bad behaviour. He's unaffected by violence, but may get upset by certain horror scenarios, particularly if they include anything resembling alien abduction, which is one of his personal bogies. He's at the age where sex is somewhere between embarrassing and boring, so wouldn't want to sit through anything that had more than trivial sex scenes in it.

Jay and Silent Bob might just pass those criteria, although the scene with the nun in the truck might be too much for him. It has a lot of humour in it which would definitely appeal to him, as well.

Many things about me might be explained by my reading A Clockwork Orange when I was nine.
