1. I believe in a supreme being.
2. I believe that grace and mercy exist, and that far too often we are too preoccupied with superficial concerns to see them when they occur.
3. I believe that it is only God's job -- not mine, not any other human's -- to say who has favour in his sight, and that anyone who claims otherwise is not merely presumptuous but blasphemous.
4. I believe that hell exists -- but that we make and choose it ourselves.
5. I believe that Shakespeare was right when he wrote "There are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio, than are dreamt of in your philosophy." I believe that the universe is not only stranger than we imagine, but stranger than we can imagine.
6. I believe that most people are basically good, even if they do not always act that way. I include myself in this description. "Being good" does not preclude being wrong about things: the road to hell is often paved with good intentions.
7. I believe that most people are capable of unimaginable evil, but also of unimaginable good.
8. I believe that courage can be found in the most mundane of lives, and that heroes abound around us, who go unrecognized and "blossom in the dust". I think that we are a world of magpies: quick to reward the shiny and bright, valuing form over substance.
9. I believe in the Bill of RIghts.
10. I believe that true beauty is far more than skin deep.
11. I believe in the innate worth of all persons, even where I cannot recognize it myself.
12. I believe that all children are a blessing. I also believe that not all people should have children (and, unfortunately, some of the people who should not have children are people who already have them). I believe that what determines whether or not someone should be a parent is not age, or wealth, or sexual orientation, or creed, nationality or race, but whether one is capable of caring for a child for their own sake rather than as an extension of the parents. I think that the act of giving a child you cannot raise to another so that the child can be taken care of properly is an act of supreme courage and shows far more love for the child -- indeed for all children -- than is shown by people for whom a child is a designer accessory.
13. I believe that true humility (as opposed to self-deprecation or self-loathing, which are not the same thing) is far too rare a commodity in this world, and that we all (especially including myself here) need to be more humble.
14. I believe that I have been "blessed to be a blessing," and that the great blessings I have received in my life mean that I need to be blessing to others where I can. The fact that I very often fail at this (such as today) does not mean I should stop trying.
15. I believe that truth and beauty exist, even when I cannot see them.
