There are actually a number of issues on which the Economist is distinctly liberal, though from their own unique position. They have, apparently, been advocating gay marriage for some years, and have also been advocating the legalisation of drug use for about as long. The latter issue makes them a lot more liberal than many liberal groups, in fact. Though they get to these conclusions from what might be better described as libertarian than liberal principles.
