For those of you who watch CNN, and just heard Aaron Brown say "There is only one state in the country that allows you to register on election day".....

No no no no NOOOO. There are three -- Idaho, Wisconsin, and Minnesota -- and that does not even include North Dakota which has no registration requirements at all.

Oh, and where I got that information? In the case of Idaho and ND, from the official election department websites. In the case of Wisconsin, it was from the People For The American Way, who in their "Voter's Bill of Rights" pamphlet includes actual cites to Wisconsin state code. In the case of Minnesota, it was from materials from the League of Women Voters. No, it did not include cites, but hell, it is The League of Women Voters we're talking about here.

I will grant Brown's basic point -- there is way too much variation in election laws across the land, and it would be good if people could register and vote on the same day.

But would it be too much to ask for a journalist to get his facts right? But I guess three (or four, if you include ND) sounds so much less impressive than *one*.

This might be a good place to mention my voters' rights post.

Edit: [livejournal.com profile] juliansinger points out that New Hampshire does as well, if you have proof of age and residency.

Actually, so does New Hampshire, if you have proof of a) age, and b) residency.

Thanks for the information! NH has its "How to Vote" materials in video format, and I couldn't get them to work for me. It and Delaware where the only two states where I did not find *something* I could actually acess.

Huh. Stupid NH.

I know this information because, well, I went up and canvassed up there, and we were focusing on unregistered people.

Aaron Brown is a pretty lousy excuse for a journalist. Yet another bit of evidence. Sigh.
