Fifty foods you should eat before you die.... If you notice a anglophilic slant to this, it may be because it was put together by the BBC. (Things I've eaten are in bold.)

1. Fresh fish -- my dad fished a lot as a way to help feed seven mouths. One of the results of this is now I don't eat fish -- I got spoiled by being fed very fresh fish.
2. Lobster
3. Steak
4. Thai food
5. Chinese food
6. Ice cream
7. Pizza
8. Crab
9. Curry
10. Prawns
11. Moreton Bay Bugs
-- I had these at the Sydney Opera House in 1991 with [livejournal.com profile] brian1789
12. Clam chowder
13. Barbecues
14. Pancakes
15. Pasta
16. Mussels
17. Cheesecake
18. Lamb
19. Cream tea
20. Alligator
21. Oysters
22. Kangaroo
23. Chocolate
24. Sandwiches
25. Greek food
26. Burgers
27. Mexican food
28. Squid
-- calamari, blech.
29. American diner breakfast -- Just a shout out here to Skyway Jack's in St. Petersburg, Florida
30. Salmon
31. Venison

32. Guinea pig -- just what I've always wanted, fried cavy. Or maybe cavy in mole sauce.
33. Shark
34. Sushi
35. Paella - I actually did not get around to eating paella while in Spain.
36. Barramundi
37. Reindeer
38. Kebab
39. Scallops
40. Australian meat pie
41. Mango
42. Durian fruit
43. Octopus --baby octopus, to be exact. I ate one, and then couldn't get past the tentacles.
44. Ribs
45. Roast beef
46. Tapas
-- in Madrid, with sangria.
47. Jerk chicken/pork
48. Haggis - what exactly is in haggis? is it actually a food product?
49. Caviar
50. Cornish pasty

What interests me is what didn't make the list -- how could one go through life never having had strawberries? Or bacon? Or maple syrup? [Edit: Okay, so lots of people go through life having never eaten bacon (or ham, another favorite of mine) for religious reasons. But I stand by strawberries and maple syrup. And maybe tomatoes, too.]

I believe haggis is a stomach stuffed with oatmeal, tripe, and spices. What's a Moreton Bay Bug? Is it an insect?

It's some sort of crustacean -- they look something like trilobytes, if I recall correctly.

MBBs were kind of funny-looking, with taste/texture between prawns and lobster IIRC (it was 13 years ago...).

Allergies.

Yes, haggis is a food product, for some values of such. I believe it's usually a sheep's stomach stuffed oats, suet, sheep's heart/liver/lungs and spices (at least in the recipes I've seen). Personally, I intend to go the rest of my life without having eaten it, no matter what the BBC says.

I've had all of these except 32,36,42 and 48. I'd probably try any of them once, despite the nasty things I've heard about the latter two...

I've et squirrel before, is that close enough to guinea pig? I hate to say it butsquirrel does taste like chicken. Gamy chicken but chicken. People don't eat lobster or shellfish for the same reasons as ham or bacon.

And how can you not have had Jerk Chicken?!? It's only the best thing to come from the carribean since rum.

And how about reindeer? Is that close enough to venison to count? I've had reindeer but never venison. *shrug*

I dunno if I could eat a guinea pig. (I own a couple. They're awful cute. And I certainly don't eat, say, dogs. Which I've also owned.)

Are shrimp and prawns the same?

I haven't eaten:
11. trilobytes
12. clam chowder
19. cream tea (what?)
20. alligator (yum!)
22. kangaroo (odd)
25. greek --- maybe, not sure
32. guinea pig (who cooks these anyway?)
33. shark (don't think so; unlikely to at this point)
35. paella --- unless that's the yellow rice stuff Bi-rite sells
36. bauamundi ---what?
37. but i ate venison too
40. Aussie meat pie (do I have to go to Australia?)
44. ribs (have I actually eaten these? certainly not in copious quanities, but ever?)
45. roast beef (probably, but ick!)
46. tapas --- not real ones
47. what is that?
48. no haggis yet
50 Cornish pasty (huh?)
