There has been drama going on elsewhere in LJ. I am not going to go into it, but it did cause me to change my user info. For the record...

Anyone is free to do anything noncommercial with my public posts in this account, as long as they give me proper attribution. You can link, you can copy, I don't care, as long as you identify my words as coming from me. I'm a big girl -- I can handle it. I would ask that people not repost friend's-locked posts without seeking permission, except where a post has been public for a while. (This is in large part because now that I've changed my default journal setting to public, friends'-locked posts usually either contain personal information or concern third parties who might not want to be the subject of public debate.) I don't think that is ever likely to happen: I occasionally mistakenly post things publicly and change the settings, but I generally figure that out within a short period of time. (Sometimes I out and out change my mind, but then again, that usually happens within a short period of time.)

Again, commercial use would be a totally different kettle of fish, but since my postings here would be of limited commercial value, I'm not going to stress over it. [livejournal.com profile] madameverdi is different -- I would like, someday, to do something commercial with the material, so I would rather people simply link than copy. (Yeah, I know, when pigs fly, but still.) Oh, before you ask: information is not copyrightable, but the expressions of it are. So you can look up the date of the Battle of Trafalger yourself, or take my word for it, but you shouldn't replicate my snarky comments about Lord Nelson without attribution. : )

Again, this is not really an issue, since I have less than 100 people on my friends list, and [livejournal.com profile] madameverdi has only about thirty. Just being tidy : )

Have you looked at http://creativecommons.org/?
I believe they've got tools that will let you create a legally binding licence just as you describe, requiring attributions but otherwise availaable for noncommercial use

...for a while.

How long is "awhile"?

Also, btw, why /did/ you switch your default from friends-only to public? I don't think I ever asked.
