Last night, I saw "Chicago". I loved it. Which did not surprise me, as musicals are probably my favorite genre of movie. So, I got to thinking....

As of 2002, what was the last musical to win the Academy Award for Best Picture?

"Oliver!" (1968)(Source: Internet Movie DataBase)

The movie that I think of as the Last Really Great Hollywood Musical*, "Cabaret" was nominated for ten and won eight Oscars (including Best Director for Bob Fosse, Best Actress for Liza Minnelli, and Best Supporting Actor for Joel Grey) but lost Best Picture to "The Godfather." Source: IMdB.

*No, at least in my book, "Moulin Rouge" does not count. As much as I love it. And "A Chorus Line" was a bad movie.
