There are a couple of things I could have added to the homophobia list, but didn't because, compared to people who have suffered greatly, they seemed rather small.

I am the girl who was harassed at band camp because I gave another girl a back rub.

I am the girl whose guidance counselor told her, when she applied to an all-women's college, "You don't want to go there -- only lesbians go to those sort of schools."

I am the mother who is constantly fighting to try install an abhorrence of homophobia in her sons, in a culture where "you're gay" has become school yard shorthand for "you're stupid and uncool."

I'm glad that you're fighting that fight, though (and all the other fights you pursue).

D. referred to something as "gay" yesterday. K. pointed out that was something he shouldn't say in front of me. I added "or your father". I remember that [livejournal.com profile] brian1789 said something, but I'm not recalling it at the moment. I'm mentioning this because I appreciated that Kevin gets that using "gay" as an insult is offensive to me.

I think those are just as important as, say, someone getting bashed. It's the small things that lead to the larger things.
