[livejournal.com profile] brian1789 has developed a kidney stone and is in a hospital in Munich. When I talked to him he was okay, albeit groggy from the pain meds. They will keep him there for a few days and get rid of the stone.

Poor guy. Well, it's better that he's in Germany than rural southern Spain.

Well... (sheepishly) I actually only called for help when the pain got so bad that I couldn't keep from moaning... the hotel staff were very cooperative in calling in paramedics, though.

Oh, no. And hard on you being so far away.

Yes, I'm glad he went and got checked. I'm sure he will be fine.
and I"ll be sending him all my good vibes.
:)
hugs to you too, my dear.

Oh...how terrible. I'm glad he's getting help, though. I've tried calling him, but no luck. I don't know if his cell works there...

From: [identity profile] mactavish.livejournal.com

Hospitals often forbid the use of cellular devices, as some can interfere with instruments.

It depends. I've been in the hospital when it's been okay and not. ICU? Absolutely not. Regular room? Good chance it's okay.

I just got off the phone w/ [livejournal.com profile] patgreene. I don't think I'll try calling him again, and will wait for him to call me. I'm a bit worried, and hope he's okay... I've had to tell our PI (lead) what happened.

Sorry, but I was getting an injection when you called (wry grin)...

Oh dear me. I understand those are horrifically painful.

He's in my thoughts today.

*hugs*

Got your message-

I've sent e-mail to the colleague he requested, and will SMS him recharge codes of both sorts (since I'm not clear if he wants a cell recharge or a phone card).

I've let everyone here who needs to, know. Hopefully I'll talk to him tomorrow. Oy. Glad he was in Munich. He'd have been transferred to Sevilla here, I imagine, but still.

From: [identity profile] brian1789.livejournal.com

Thanks -- hugely -- for sending me those charge codes yesterday, otherwise I couldn't have made the necessary notifications to work, insurance, as well as home and friends.

por supuesto, senor.

These are the things we do, y'know? Glad you're out and doing well.

From: [identity profile] juliansinger.livejournal.com

Yikes.

Am thinking of him. (Praying, whatever. The terms occasionally conflate, for me.)

From: [identity profile] ladysea.livejournal.com

Ouch. I am oh so familiar with this.

Send him hugs from us.

*hugs* for you too!

That's terrible :( I am glad he's already in the hospital.

I am so glad he went to the doctor! How are they planning to get rid of the stone?

From: [identity profile] tenacious-snail.livejournal.com

usually, the hope is to pass the stone. His is blocking one kidney, and causing more pain from the back-up there. There are procedures to break up stones, too. They were planning to do some further testing on Tuesday.

From: [identity profile] brian1789.livejournal.com

It broke up on its own, sometime yesterday, and is, well, passed :). No lithotripter necessary, or it would have been $5000 out of pocket instead of merely $1100...

Prayers and good thoughts on the way.

Poor guy! Please tell him that he's in my thoughts, and know that you are as well. Let me know if you want to talk or anything.

From: [identity profile] deedeebythebay.livejournal.com

Oh Good Heavens!!! I'm sorry. I'll be keeping him in my thoughts.

I called Jay at the hospital, and read him the various comments, wishes and prayers in your LJ, my LJ, his LJ and [livejournal.com profile] hopeforyou's LJ. He seemed to appreciate knowing that there are so many folks who are concerned about him.

From: [identity profile] brian1789.livejournal.com

That was very sweet of you, dear. I did appreciate it... it was a lonely experience, given no friends or family nearby and the language barrier.
