Every U.S. high schooler should know that the Teapot Dome Scandal plagued the administration of Warren G. Harding. My question is.... what *was* the Teapot Dome, and where was it located?

Teapot Dome was a federal oil reserve near Caspar, Wyoming. Control of the oil reserves at Teapot Dome and at Elk Hills, California were transferred by Harding's executive order from control of the navy to the Department of the Interior. Secretary of the Interior Albert B. Fall (isn't that a great name for a corrupt government official?) then sold the leases to private developers without competitive bidding. Fall was later convicted of accepting a $100,000 bribe, and other government officials were implicated. In 1927 a Supreme Court decision gave control of the fields back to the U.S. government. Harding (who was not directly implicated in the scandal) didn't live to see the end result.... he died of a heart attack in the midst of the scandals, in 1923. Source: Grolier's Encyclopedia.>
