Hey, [personal profile] sarahh... it's a meme!

([personal profile] pat Sep. 13th, 2005 08:42 pm)
Tonight I was talking to my friend Jen about someone else and she said "Nobody's going to die, nobody's going to jail -- he'll be fine."

I still want t-shirts.

I know! I heard it from some random person the other day. My jaw nearly hit the floor.

wh00t! Yeah, it's sad that we didn't manage it, cause I really want MARTE Remote Operations t-shirts that say it.

*giggle* wh00t!

a friend of mine, who now has two children, right after her first child she had a day where she just freaked out about it. the "What If's" just took over her brain and she coudln't stop thinking of all the Terrible Things that Might Happen.

she called her aunt, an earthy farm woman, who has six kids. her aunt said, "Baby, a man born to hang, ain't gonnna drown. you just calm right down now, everything's gonna be fine."

i always loved that ;)

a man born to hang...

Er... precept violated last night, apparently... a departing CSHS grad student (M) on his last night here went into the plaza after dinner, and together with a couple of others hit the bars... were hauled in by the Nerva police. One of them was the same guy (A) who was nearly decapitated by the metal brick on Sunday... he is having a bad week.

M will miss his flight home to the Univ. of Oklahoma today... the police came to Casiano's at 5:30am and asked him what to do with the guys -- they had been smashing up parked cars, random vandalism, and did over E1K in damage, apparently. CS is in Madrid and is despondent...

So you think that M, A and others really were committing those acts of vandalism? Oh, sh*t.

From: [identity profile] brian1789.livejournal.com

They were apparently far, far gone... vastly inebriated. The policia were initially amused, except that the two guys began being, er, uncooperative. Then the damage was discovered... (groan). They're grad students, but their advisor chose not to come to Spain to supervise them. Still, 24-year-olds should know better. Even Americans...

Well, the precept doesn't apply when you have people actively engaged in criminal activities... just as it doesn't apply to people in active peril for their lives.

But sheesh... I hate it when Americans do things like that abroad, even more so than when they do them at home. It's not like America doesn't have enough of a reputation for thuggishness as it is.

*Graduate students* representing their discipline and their institution abroad should definitely know better. Has someone notified their institution yet? There should really be academic discipline as well as whatever happens to them in the Spanish judicial system. Universities sometimes respond badly if they find out indirectly (such as from the press) that their students have been behaving badly overseas, and appreciate getting a heads-up directly.

Just goes to show ya... you never know *what* is going to happen. Period. I thought people were putting down their money and placing their bets on me getting sick and/or hospitalised... *shakes head*

God... CS is in Madrid and despondent? The fact that she's in Madrid again probably is adding to that; she hasn't had much luck there at all this field season.

Gah. Just... gah.

Stupid, stupid, stupid.

My stepmom's saying was "if you were born to be shot, you will never be hung."

Hey, I know I'm not representative of my age or my country, but..... *12* year olds should know better.

My theory is that it's a rebellion against their Bible-belt environment in Oklahoma...

From: [identity profile] brian1789.livejournal.com

Trashing random cars... yes. David would know better.

(nods) yet one more thing to be apologetic about, abroad... sigh.

From: [identity profile] hobbitbabe.livejournal.com

Good theory. I hope that doesn't make you or the other NASA people want to protect them from consequences at home, though. Even a big Canadian university with a very small dose of in loco parentis would be concerned about the effects on their reputation, and would want to make sure that their other students see that troublemakers abroad also get in academic hot water.
