Sir Alfred Hitchcock is widely considered by intelligent movie-lovers (i.e., people like me) to be one of the greatest artists in the medium. How many times did he win the Academy Award for Best Director?

Zero. None, nada, zip, zilch. Oh, he was nominated for the award five times (for Psycho, Rear Window, Spellbound, Lifeboat, and Rebecca) and they gave him a Thalberg award at the end of his career, but he never won Best Director. (Can you tell how much this upsets me?) Hell, they didn't even nominate him for Vertigo or Strangers on a Train or North by Northwest or.....

Deep breath. Must stop ranting. At least the folks at the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences had the good sense to award him two Best Director Emmys for episodes of "Alfred Hitchcock Presents": "The Case of Mr. Pelham" (1956) and "Lamb to the Slaughter" (1959). (I would really love to see "Lamb to the Slaughter": I am assuming that it is taken from the wonderful Roald Dahl story by the same name.)
