I haven't been writing anything in the last six weeks -- I've spent a good chunk of it sick or recovering. I just wrote only the second piece since April 10. (I write very slowly.) It was about the Barry Bonds/Babe Ruth non-issue. (The other piece was about the musical Rent and its use as a teaching tool.)

Thanks for the pointer to the piece on Rent. As it happens, we just saw it last week (for the first time!), so I now have a context for understanding your post. Sounds like you were having some of the same discussions that we were having with our kid when she was watching the portion of the movie she saw. :^) I agree, it's a piece with a great deal of potential as a teaching tool.

Tangentially related--I've seen La Boheme, but it's been so long that I've forgotten most of it. Do you happen to know how closely related the two are? Is that opera as strongly about choices, for instance? I know that the opera had the protagonist dying of consumption--seems to me that might map differently than AIDS onto the various issues.
