Although he a designed structures such as the Washington Arch and Madison Square Garden, this architect is as well known in the public imagination for the way he died. Who was he?

Stanford White. Part of the highly influential architectural firm of McKim, Mead and White, Stanford White became known for something other than his artistic achievements when Harry Thaw, his former lover's husband, shot him to death. Source: Biography.com . The murder became the subject of the book, The Girl in the Red Velvet Swing by Charles and Louise Samuels.

I did not know that. Weird.

I've got one for you. Where, according to the Oxford English Dictionary, is the first usage of the word "Baseball" ?

Maybe this is more common knowledge than I think, I'm not a fan of baseball but I am a fan of this author.

Hmmm... a guess -- Mark Twain? I really don't know, but I'd love to find out.

Re:

Close but no seegar. Not even a cheap one that Sam would've liked. The first Instance of the word "Baseball" is in the beginning of NORTHANGER ABBEY by Jane Austen. Weird huh?

I just started reading it today and in her introduction to Catherine mentions that she likes baseball. In the notes, they mention that OED cites it as the first reference.

I immediately thought, "at last! the shoe is on the other foot!" I'd have wrung my hands like a silent film villain but there wasn't time, my lunch hour was over.
