Pat, there's a book with a title something like "Why bad things happen to good people," that might prove helpful.
In the grand scheme of things, sometimes it just seems that there's no justice, nor even mercy. The nuns who taught me would have said that it's a Divine Mystery, and that it's not given for us to know the entirety of God's design. The Jesuits I knew later might have said that suffering and difficulty are part of any life, and we learn and grow from them.
Just personally, I'm not entirely sure either answer is right. Nor will I pretend to know what the right answer is. But I do know that you're a good person, and it makes me ache to see you so beat about by outrageous fortune.
