The first state to elect a woman governor was Wyoming, who in 1924 elected Nellie Tayloe Ross. Ross was quite an individual: after serving two years as governor of Wyoming (she had been elected to fill her dead husband's unexpired term), she alter went on to serve as Director of the U.S.Bureau, and was responsible for building U.S. mints at Fort Knox, West Point, and San Francisco.
