Mata Hari. Zelle, Dutch by birth, joined the German secret service in 1907. During World War I, she disclosed information to the Germans that she obtained from high Allied officers who were (as the Information Please Almanac so delicately puts it) "on intimate terms with her." She was arrested by the French and executed for espionage in 1917.
