What two countries fought the wonderfully named "War of Jenkin's Ear"?
England and Spain. Although the real causes were more complex (namely English smuggling and resentment towards Spanish commercial success), the war arose out of an incident on April 9, 1738 in which the Spanish coast guards cut off the ear of Robert Jenkins, master of the English ship Rebecca. Jenkins went back to London with his story (and his severed ear), and Sir Robert Walpole, the PM, declared war. No one won the war... it led to involvement of the parties in the larger War of Austrian Succession.
