It's not easy for me to be at a social gathering where I know next to no one. It's even harder at 7:30 a.m. Even more so on two hours of sleep.

But I was a good girl and went to K's school's volunteer appreciation breakfast (I work with the kids in his class on reading every Thursday). I now have a nifty little pin to show for my efforts.

I was just thinking yesterday how much more I like working in K's class than with my literature group in D's class. The kindergartners and first-graders are excited about reading... the third graders are jaded. Being cool is really important, and being excited about reading is not cool, at least with the little boys I work with. Sad, really.

congrats on getting through the morning!

i consider it my mission in life to make sure all my students love reading and do not consider it an 'uncool' thing to do! what messages about reading does that classroom's teacher give to her students?

Actually, the teacher is great. And you can get their attention if you have a book about ninjas or samurai -- so we read the Jackie Chan adventure books and "Samurai Sam" by Jon Sciezcka. She really tries to find out what they will enjoy reading. It is entirely possible that they think that I'm not cool, and that is why they act out, but then I am uncool. It may also be that the kids have really struggled with reading, although they are doing much better, and they may pretend to be above it all because secretly they're scared to fail at it. I don't know, and I'm not a trained teacher.
