First up, just let me say that I think this is a terrific organization that has a good idea (they distribute livestock, not food to people: the recipients are expected to raise the livestock and breed it and share with their neighbors). I would urge everyone to go to www.heifer.org to donate to them. I received their brochure in the mail today.

Having said that, I was brought up short by the item that read "2 Trios of Guinea Pigs to help Ecuadorian families add protein to their diets and increase income." Okay, so I know it is my ignorant, American-centric food preferences coming to the fore, but I don't know that I'll be able to look at those little fluffballs in Petco in quite the same way from now on....

Fried cavy, anyone?

Brain. Could I have it back please? =)

I got the gift catalog in the mail on Saturday. (Is the picture of the little boy surrounded by the pen full of baby ducks not the cutest thing in the world?) I was brought up short by the trio of guinea pigs "to add protein" to someone's diet as well. Now, I am well aware that some places consider "guinea pig on a stick" to be a tasty meal and I don't have a big problem with that, but having a pet guinea pig myself I don't think I can donate them to someone for food purposes. I know it's probably hypocritical of me or something since I eat meat, but I was looking through there for donations that didn't involve the gift of an animal that was highly likely to be eaten.

(I'd kind of like a llama myself. Not that I have any place to keep it. =) )

Although the more I think about it.... You know, with, say, a mole sauce, it might not be that bad.: > Probably tastes like rabbit -- would that be red wine or white? : >
