First up, just let me say that I think this is a terrific organization that has a good idea (they distribute livestock, not food to people: the recipients are expected to raise the livestock and breed it and share with their neighbors). I would urge everyone to go to www.heifer.org to donate to them. I received their brochure in the mail today.
Having said that, I was brought up short by the item that read "2 Trios of Guinea Pigs to help Ecuadorian families add protein to their diets and increase income." Okay, so I know it is my ignorant, American-centric food preferences coming to the fore, but I don't know that I'll be able to look at those little fluffballs in Petco in quite the same way from now on....
Fried cavy, anyone?
