I can't go to Spain, and I'm grumpy about that. [livejournal.com profile] brian1789's grandmother, although she's home from hospital, is still in bad shape, and I'm worried about that. And his cousin just discovered he has cancer, and I'm shocked about that. And I have a headache, and I am unhappy about that.

Several different emotions, not one of them good.

Many years ago, I interviewed for a job with a firm on one of the top floors of one of the Pennzoil Place towers in Houston. Thirty-six floors of sheet-glass walls, completely floor to ceiling. The attorney who interviewed me told me that one of the first things they did to associates was stand them in one of the corners -- where clear glass met clear glass -- and see how uncomfortable they got.

It'll be interesting to see how Rita deals with them. Not that I'm snickering or anything.

Just how cool is it that Terry Pratchett has a species of fossil turtle named after him: Psephophorus terrypratchetti.

And laypeople think scientists have no sense of humor.

The latest [livejournal.com profile] madameverdi is up. It's about music this time -- and has absolutely nothing to do with New Orleans, Texas, Louisiana, or hurricanes.

I hadn't been writing in my other journal for a months -- since the kids got out for the summer -- until last week. It's slow going, starting to write and research again. And I wonder why I do it. And the answer is...

I do it because I have to. When I'm healthy at least. I know only about 25 people read the things. It's not like NaNoWriMo, which was sort of a "let's see if we can pull this off" rather than a compulsion.

It just takes time (mainly because I do try to be at least a little careful about sources, and there is the coming up with the questions in the first place) -- especially when I'm rusty -- and I have a hard time justifying it to myself sometimes.
