[livejournal.com profile] cyan_blue taught me to make earrings the other day. It's as addictive as knitting, and, for the ADD side of my brain, I can actually complete a project in an hour -- except for bead buying, which like buying high-end yarn can consume lots of time and money. The only advantage beads have over yarn is that they take up a lot less space.

The top left earrings are red and iridescent glass beads, the top right are red quartz oblong beads, amethyst chips and silver-colored seed beads. The bottom right pair are blue glass round beads, hematite ovals, and wire spirals; the bottom right are onyx, mother of pearl, and red jasper beads. All the hooks are sterling silver, even though the wire in the body is not.

It is going to be very hard to keep from buying a lot of beads. I keep wanting to go out and buy lapis 6mm and 8mm beads, and jade beads, even though I know I would not use all of them. I have been buying my beads by the bead, whic is more expensive, but which keeps me from going off the deep end. (I did, however, buy a string of hematite 8mm, and several dyed red coral beads, which are going to be some drop earrings.)

I need to start beading necklaces. The jasper/MOP/onyx earrings, while nice and understated (and businesslike) really need a necklace to go with them.

See what I mean about addictive?

they are quite lovely. As far as addictions go, this one seems fairly benign. You can always decide everyone needs a pair for Christmas, or that your church craft fair means that you can tithe in earrings.

It was fun beading with you, and I really like the pair you made for me :) Thanks so much...

[livejournal.com profile] purplerabbit just looked over my shoulder at the photo you posted above, and she said that she really likes these earrings that you made. Turns out she likes this style even better than the ones that I typically make out of seed beads ;) Guess I need to start doing more in this style as well!

Hi Pat,

cyan_blue was telling me last evening that you were getting into beading. I plan to start having 'Bead Nite' here at my apartment in Oakland at least once a month. I was thinking of doing a week night, but I would like cyan_blue to be able to attend, so I am thinking about what other days would also work. I might do 2 monthly nights - one weeknight, and one Sunday afternoon/evening.

These would be casual "open house" kind of events.

I added you to my friends list, as I post everything, pretty much, as friends only. I hope to have something in April, but it depends on how quickly I get the rest of my unpacking done. I have pics of some of my jewelry in my LJ scrapbook. http://pics.livejournal.com/missk/

Beads are fun! They are pretty rocks! And sparklies!

I seem to not be selling self-made jewelry these days, so if you wanted a few beads, I could pass you some. Although you never know. So if you wanted to go to a rock show together, I'd be happy to split strands of beads with you.
