During the Good Friday liturgy, when we pray for "all who have not received the Gospel of Christ", it includes "those who in the name of Christ have persecuted others". We pray that God will open their hearts to truth.

Christianity is by its very nature a proselytizing faith, but the Episcopalians are the most respectful of other traditions that I've found so far, with the exception of the Quakers and the U-Us.

Thank you for continuing to share your faith in this way. Between you and [livejournal.com profile] redhawke, you have made a persuasive case in support of the possibility that Episcopalians might (generally, as a whole; there are always individual exceptions to any rule!) be "good" Christians. ;^) I'm really honestly heartened that there are "mainstream" Christians out there who are indeed respectful of other traditions. Warms my heart, it does.

*hugs*

i am an episcopalian by choice..received into the church in 1989 by the rt. rev. george barrett. i remember well this day in santa barbara. i was raised catholic, my father is jewish, and i left all church, even reconsidered the reasons i was christian at all, by the time i was in college. it was a college english teacher and a december "lessons and carols" that brought me to the episcopal church.

never before have i found an organized religion that was so open to all lifestyle choices, so tolerant of other religions and so accepting of others views. proud to be an episcopalian....yep, me too!

Having come from a somewhat tumultuous religious background myself, I've been very glad to come to rest in the Episcopal Church. My father was an atheist but raised Catholic, my mother was a fundamentalist, I was raised Baptist, and I spent 20 years (very happily too) as a Quaker. These days I've found both peace and joy in the Episcopal Church. The openness, the grand music, the mysticism, the practical social concerns, and the lovely language all drew me, and my partner Michele and I have found a wonderful church on the Peninsula.

I've just added you to my friends list; I found your journal through [livejournal.com profile] cathouse_blues. Lovely writing.

Thank you.

If it is not too intrusive, might I ask what church you attend? I attend St. Timothy's, Mountain View. Long on good people, short on architecture (it was one of those mid-sixties modern churches -- it has been compared to a Pizza Hut in appearance). But there also great churches in Palo Alto, Sunnyvale and Cupertino. (If I am being intrusive, please forgive me and ignore the request.)

Not intrusive at all. We attend All Saints Palo Alto, which looks like a fortress from the outside. It's more attractive inside, though I still don't think ribbed concrete is the esthetic equivalent of fan vaulting. But the acoustics are lovely, and we have a magnificent pipe organ. The rector and assistant pastor are both women, too. A wonderful and loving church -- so much so that when we moved from Santa Clara to the South Bay, we kept on attending there.
